Just Us

Maybe it was because of luck.
I walked past you in the hall—
Your hair’s so wild,
your eyes so bright—
a smile playing on your lips
as you caught my eye.

Maybe it was because of the seasons.
The autumn air gushing,
the leaves dangling—
Until they fell,
dancing with the wind,
one after another.

Maybe it was because of sympathy.
The waves drowned me
till I was numb,
your steady hand searching
till it rested,
reassuring on my shoulder.
The moon,
dazzling as it peaked out
from the other side of the cloud.

Maybe it was because of fate.
That night out on the fields
where no one can see,
My hand found yours.

Here, we are safe;
here, there are no more prying eyes—
it’s just us,
two girls shimmering
in the waning night.
